A strain differs from a sprain. A sprain is a tearing or stretching of ligaments; on the other hand, a strain is a tearing or stretching of muscle or tendon. A tendon is a fibrous tissue cord that connects muscles to bones. An ankle or foot strain can be acute or chronic. Acute strains can occur after a single trauma (i.e. slipping on ice, running during sports, etc.). In contrast, chronic strains are typically the result of long-term overuse of the ankle and foot muscles (it usually occurs in long-distance runners, soccer players, dancers, etc.).
